Former PBA and Gilas Pilipinas superstar Terrence Romeo recently proved that he is still one of the most electrifying offensive weapons in Philippine basketball. Suiting up as an import for Team Bacacay in the Albay Intertown Governors Cup, Romeo put on an absolute masterclass. He dropped 40 points, dished out 9 assists, and grabbed 7 rebounds, leading his team to a dominant 122-96 victory over a Camalig squad featuring his former FEU teammate, Paul Sanga.
Perhaps the most impressive part of his stat line? He played all 40 minutes without resting. From pulling up for deep threes to executing his signature crafty drives, "TR7" put the entire Bicolano hoops community on notice that his scoring touch has not faded.
But while the highlight reels from Albay are incredibly entertaining, they highlight a glaring, frustrating mystery for basketball fans: Why is Terrence Romeo not on a PBA roster right now?
The Priority Was Always the PBA
To understand the confusion, we have to rewind to mid-2025. Romeo was on an expiring contract with the Terrafirma Dyip, navigating a knee injury that had kept him sidelined. As his August 2025 free agency approached, he was very vocal about his future intentions.
Romeo explicitly stated that his main priority was to remain in the PBA, noting the "great debt of gratitude" he owed to the league where he started. He acknowledged that he had offers to take his talents overseas—where he could have undoubtedly commanded a lucrative salary—but he intentionally put those on the back burner. He wanted to stay in the Philippines and find a PBA team that would simply trust his capabilities. He confidently stated that he still had plenty of gas left in the tank and it was too early for him to stop playing.
Yet, despite his willingness to stay and his legendary resume as a three-time scoring champion and former Finals MVP, the PBA doors seemingly remained closed.
The Elephant in the Room
The reality of professional basketball is that front offices rarely show their full hand. When a player of Romeo's caliber is left unsigned, fans are left to speculate on the real reasons why teams are hesitant to bring him on board.
The Injury History: Is it purely a medical concern? Romeo has battled knee issues in recent years, including the injury that sidelined him during his final stretch with Terrafirma. Teams might be gun-shy about committing roster spots and salary cap space to a veteran guard with a history of lower-body injuries.
System Fit and Chemistry: Modern PBA offenses increasingly favor switch-heavy defenses and highly structured, ball-moving systems. Some front offices might unfairly pigeonhole Romeo as a high-usage, isolation-heavy guard who is difficult to integrate into a plug-and-play system.
The Shift to Youth: With the influx of young, dynamic guards entering the league from the collegiate ranks and overseas, teams might simply be prioritizing long-term youth development over signing a veteran.
Regardless of the whispered reasons in PBA boardrooms, seeing Romeo drop 40 points while playing a full 40 minutes in a regional league is a bittersweet experience. It is a joy to see him healthy, smiling, and embarrassing defenders with his handle again. But it also feels like a massive waste of top-tier talent.
Hopefully, one day, the real reason behind his PBA exile will come to light. Better yet, perhaps a PBA franchise will watch the tape from the Albay Governors Cup, realize that pure, unadulterated shot creation is a commodity you can never have enough of, and finally give TR7 the comeback tour he deserves.
