PBA Import Highlights: NLEX new import is Westbrook?

Just imagine the sheer magnitude of a blockbuster NLEX Road Warriors team featuring none other than Mr. Triple Double himself, Russell Westbrook. With his explosive athleticism and relentless motor, the PBA hardwood would witness a level of superstardom rarely seen in its history. When DeQuan Jones suffered a heartbreaking leg injury, the PBA internet went into overdrive dreaming of this exact scenario.

The Westbrook Connection

Not a few netizens broached the idea that since Westbrook recently announced his retirement from professional basketball, he could be available to play in the PBA. The fuel to this fire? His strong connections with NLEX head coach Jimmy Alapag. Coach Jimmy served as a player development coach for the Sacramento Kings last season, which turned out to be Westbrook's final year in the NBA.

Coach Jimmy Alapag Sets the Record Straight

As much as fans wanted to see a Westbrook-NLEX era, reality had to set in. When asked if the former NBA MVP was on the short list of imports to bring in after Jones’ injury, Alapag couldn't help but laugh.

  • "Unfortunately, Russ is not on our short list," Alapag clarified with a smile.

  • He added that while fans shouldn't expect him to suit up, a tour isn't out of the question: "Maybe he will come visit, but no stints in the PBA".

Enter Deonte Burton: The Sacramento Tie Continues

While NLEX isn't getting Westbrook, they are getting the next best thing in terms of familiarity: a player who shared the Sacramento system.

The Road Warriors officially announced that they are tapping Deonte Burton as their replacement import for the PBA 50th Season Governors' Cup. Here is why Burton is the perfect fit:

  • The Kings Connection: The 32-year-old Burton played for the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League and had a brief stint with the Sacramento Kings.

  • Pre-existing Chemistry: He played under Coach Alapag, who was an assistant coach at Stockton from 2021 to 2023 before moving up to the Sacramento Kings' player development staff.

A Calculated Move Over a Gamble

Burton is expected to touch down in the Philippines on September 4, perfectly timed right in the middle of the pro league's seven-week break. This gives him ample time to acclimate to the PBA's physical style of play.

NLEX team governor Ronald Dulatre made it clear why they made the move. "He's the personal choice of coach Jimmy," Dulatre explained. "Ang katwiran niya kilala n'ya na ito (Burton). Kaysa sumugal pa kami sa iba."

While the Westbrook dream was a fun blockbuster fantasy for PBA fans, NLEX's reality with Deonte Burton brings a trusted, system-ready powerhouse to their roster.
