After weeks of speculation and failed negotiations, it appears the TNT Tropang Giga have finally landed their target.
In a major move to stabilize their PBA Governors' Cup title-retention campaign, TNT is reportedly set to acquire high-scoring Fil-Am forward Joshua Munzon from the Titan Ultra Giant Risers. According to a Spin.ph report by Gerry Ramos, the blockbuster deal will send TNT's first-round draft pick in Season 53 along with rookie big man Joe Celzo to Titan Ultra in exchange for the explosive winger.
The trade is currently awaiting the official approval of the PBA Commissioner's Office.
The Tipping Point for TNT
The urgency for TNT to pull the trigger on a major roster upgrade stems from their recent struggles. The Tropang Giga are coming off a grueling 118-111 overtime heartbreaker against the NLEX Road Warriors—a game where NLEX played most of the second half without their injured import, DeQuan Jones.
Absorbing their fourth loss in eight outings put TNT’s title-retention bid on shaky ground. Following the frustrating defeat, head coach Chot Reyes, his coaching staff, and team manager Jojo Lastimosa reportedly held a closed-door meeting inside the team dugout for almost an hour.
This impending trade also explains the noticeable absence of Munzon during Titan Ultra's recent matchup. The dynamic forward did not suit up for the Giant Risers on Wednesday night, as his team absorbed a 143-113 blowout loss to the San Miguel Beermen at the Ynares Center.
A Long, Winding Trade Rumor History
For avid PBA fans, the Munzon-to-TNT connection is not entirely new. The rumor mill, heavily fueled by renowned PBA insider Snow Badua, has been churning out potential trade packages for weeks.
Getting Titan Ultra to part ways with their franchise cornerstone required several rounds of intense negotiation. The history of the failed proposals paints a clear picture of how much TNT wanted Munzon, and how highly Titan valued him:
Offer 1: TNT initially offered a package centered around veteran Jayson Khobuntin and Rey Nambatac in exchange for Munzon. Titan Ultra swiftly rejected the proposal.
Offer 2: The Tropang Giga then pivoted, offering sharpshooter Jordan Heading for Munzon. Titan Ultra once again declined.
Offer 3: In a counter-proposal, a package featuring Nambatac and guard Antoine Galinato was discussed for Munzon, but this time, it was TNT that pulled out and rejected the terms.
Ultimately, it took a future first-round draft asset and a promising young big man in Joe Celzo to finally break the deadlock. If the PBA Commissioner's Office gives the green light, Munzon will provide TNT with a much-needed offensive spark and perimeter athleticism as they look to turn their Governors' Cup campaign around.
