The Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters found themselves in a unique mid-conference predicament. They were winning, but their engine was on a ticking clock.
Under the stellar play of BJ Johnson, Phoenix navigated the first half of the PBA Governors' Cup eliminations beautifully, compiling a 4-3 record to grab a share of second place in Group B alongside the Magnolia Hotshots. But as team manager Paolo Bugia recently confirmed, Johnson was only contracted through August due to a prior obligation in another league. He did his job, stabilized the franchise, and left them in prime playoff position.
Now, with the season-ending conference set to resume on October 7 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, the Fuel Masters are handing the keys to 26-year-old Marcellus Earlington to finish what Johnson started.
To understand what Earlington brings, you just have to look at the other side of the PBA landscape: Rain or Shine's Aaron Fuller.
Much like Fuller, Earlington is built like a tank. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing in at a sturdy 240 pounds, Earlington is not a wiry, high-flying wing. He possesses a massive, bruising body tailor-made for the physicality of the PBA. In a league where imports are often forced to slide up a position and anchor the paint against bigger local frontcourts, Earlington seems more than ready to embrace the role of a legitimate big man.
He plays heavy, uses his wide frame to carve out space on the glass, and isn't afraid to absorb contact in the shaded lane. Where Johnson provided silky scoring, Earlington is going to bring absolute brute force.
Phoenix has already given their new reinforcement a test drive, suiting him up in a recent tune-up game against the Omni Erdenet Broncos—a Mongolian club featuring former PBA import KJ McDaniels. Going head-to-head with a proven physical specimen like McDaniels is the perfect baptism by fire.
If Earlington can successfully replicate the "Aaron Fuller mold"—dominating the boards, setting bone-crushing screens, and providing a massive interior target—the Fuel Masters won't just survive the loss of BJ Johnson. They might just evolve into an even tougher out in the playoffs.
