The PBA trade rumor mill is always churning, and a recent report by veteran columnist Homer Sayson has shed light on a fascinating "what-if" scenario between the Meralco Bolts and the Magnolia Hotshots.
According to Sayson's sources, Meralco recently fielded a trade pitch from Magnolia. The Bolts politely declined the initial offer but fired back with a highly intriguing counter-proposal: a direct swap sending veteran forward Javee Mocon to the Hotshots in exchange for Javi Gomez de Liaño. Ultimately, the two sides could not reach an agreement and no deal was finalized. However, the sheer fact that this proposal was on the table offers a compelling look into the roster-building calculus of the Meralco front office.
From Magnolia’s side, exploring the market for Gomez de Liaño makes logical sense. Despite arriving with a stellar reputation and undeniable talent, the 6-foot-5 winger has struggled immensely to find consistent playing time within the Hotshots' rotation. He is spectacularly being under-utilized, buried on the bench and unable to find an offensive rhythm.
This is a stark contrast to his recent past. Before returning to the PBA, Gomez de Liaño established himself as one of the absolute best 3-point shooters in the highly competitive Korean Basketball League (KBL). Furthermore, during his prior PBA stint with Terrafirma, he proved he was capable of being the main scoring option for a franchise. His offensive potential is completely legitimate, and he simply needs minutes to unleash it.
The Meralco Calculus: Consistency vs. Ceiling
For Meralco, offering this counter-proposal was a very interesting decision.
On one hand, Javee Mocon has been a picture of stability for the Bolts. He has embraced his role perfectly, quietly providing highly efficient production. He is currently playing well as a role player, averaging a solid 6.9 points on an impressive 49% shooting from the field, while pulling down 3.9 rebounds per game. He does the dirty work, defends well, and doesn't demand high usage to be effective.
Why would Meralco consider moving a consistent veteran contributor for a player struggling to get off the bench elsewhere? It all boils down to offensive ceiling. While Mocon provides a safe, steady floor, Gomez de Liaño represents raw, game-changing firepower. Meralco's front office likely recognized that if Javi were given the green light and proper spacing in their system, he could easily rediscover the form that once made him a premier scorer.
Walking Away
In the end, the fact that no deal was made suggests that Meralco set a firm boundary. They were willing to take a calculated gamble on Gomez de Liaño's immense potential, but they were not going to overpay to make it happen.
While injecting Javi's shooting and scoring punch would have been a massive boost, the Bolts are clearly at peace with the status quo. In a long, grueling PBA conference where reliability is heavily prized, walking away from the negotiating table to keep a consistent, proven veteran contributor like Javee Mocon is a very safe fallback plan.
