NBA Trade Rumors: Golden State could end up trading Kristaps to?

As the Golden State Warriors navigate a turbulent start to their season, the front office is reportedly looking for ways to maneuver out of a difficult corner. The sudden and serious health complications surrounding center Kristaps Porzingis have left the team searching for answers and exploring the trade market.

In a recent column for Sports Illustrated, NBA analyst Jeremy Brener floated a hypothetical but highly intriguing trade scenario that would send Porzingis to the Portland Trail Blazers in a complex package centered around injured rising star Shaedon Sharpe.

Here is what the proposed blockbuster would look like:

  • Golden State Warriors Receive: Shaedon Sharpe

  • Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Kristaps Porzingis, Will Richard, a 2028 first-round pick (top-5 protected), and a 2031 first-round pick swap

While purely hypothetical, the framework of this deal makes a remarkable amount of sense when viewing the current trajectories and roster dilemmas of both franchises.

Why the Warriors Make the Deal

For Golden State, this trade is about salvaging value from a tragic situation. Porzingis, who was expected to be a major contributor, is dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)—a serious autoimmune and autonomic condition. With his basketball future uncertain, the Warriors are left holding his expiring $20 million contract.

By attaching draft capital and young prospect Will Richard, the Warriors could flip Porzingis’s expiring money into Shaedon Sharpe. The 23-year-old Sharpe is an elite athlete and a proven scorer, but he is currently sidelined and expected to miss most of the season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Why would the Warriors trade for an injured player? Flexibility. Sharpe is locked into a highly tradable four-year, $90 million contract. Golden State could either hold onto Sharpe as a cornerstone for the post-Stephen Curry era, or flip his contract later this season for a healthy, win-now veteran to maximize the closing championship window alongside Curry and Jimmy Butler.

Why the Trail Blazers Make the Deal

For Portland, this trade is a calculated asset play. The Blazers possess a crowded backcourt, and paying $90 million to Sharpe while he sits on the bench recovering from a knee injury is a tough pill to swallow for a rebuilding franchise.

By accepting this trade, Portland effectively cleans up its future cap sheet. Porzingis’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning the Blazers shed Sharpe’s long-term money instantly.

More importantly, Portland’s front office would be acquiring premium draft capital. A 2028 first-round pick (even with top-5 protection) and a 2031 pick swap from Golden State are incredibly valuable assets. By the time those picks convey, the Curry era in the Bay Area will likely be over, meaning those draft selections could end up landing in the lottery. Throw in Will Richard as a developmental flyer, and the Blazers add significant ammunition to their ongoing rebuild.

The Verdict

In the modern NBA, the most fascinating trades are often born out of mutual distress. The Warriors need to find a way to turn Porzingis's contract into a movable asset, and the Blazers have an injured, highly paid guard in a crowded rotation.

While there are no guarantees that Portland is willing to part with Sharpe's long-term upside, Brener’s trade proposal offers a realistic blueprint for how both teams can use a high-profile swap to solve their immediate problems.
