PBA Free Agency: Blackwater could send six players to UFA?

The Blackwater Bossing recently secured their most critical offseason victory by locking down franchise star Sedrick Barefield to a highly anticipated contract extension. With their primary offensive engine officially on board for the foreseeable future, management must now pivot to the less glamorous, but equally crucial, task of roster housekeeping.

According to reports surrounding the Barefield extension, Blackwater has six other players currently sitting on expiring contracts: David Murrell, Jack Cruz-Dumont, Abu Tratter, Jed Mendoza, Nick Demusis, and Mike DiGregorio.

As the Bossing evaluate their roster heading into Season 51, the decision on who stays and who hits the open market should actually be quite straightforward. Looking at the production and potential of this group, there is only one glaringly obvious retention candidate: Abu Tratter.

In a league where reliable, rugged local big men are a premium commodity, Tratter quietly put together a highly efficient and effective campaign. While he isn't the focal point of the offense, he thrives in his role. Tratter averaged a solid 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, but what truly jumps off the stat sheet is his staggering 64% field goal shooting.

Tratter does not demand touches, he does the dirty work in the paint, sets hard screens, and finishes his limited opportunities around the rim with elite efficiency. For a team building around a high-usage, ball-dominant guard like Barefield, Tratter is the exact type of low-maintenance, high-reliability frontcourt piece that a front office desperately needs to keep. Letting a big man with his efficiency and experience walk away would be a massive unforced error.

As for the rest of the expiring contracts, the arguments for retention become significantly weaker.

The only exception might be Jack Cruz-Dumont. The argument for keeping him isn't necessarily rooted in overwhelming statistical production, but rather in the currency of youth. As a young player still adjusting to the speed and physicality of the professional ranks, Cruz-Dumont possesses untapped upside. Rebuilding franchises like Blackwater cannot afford to prematurely pull the plug on young talent, making him a worthwhile, low-risk developmental investment for head coach Pat Aquino's system.

However, for the remaining quartet—David Murrell, Jed Mendoza, Nick Demusis, and Mike DiGregorio—the writing might be on the wall.

Throughout the season, these players fell victim to a combination of inconsistent performance or simply being buried on the bench without enough minutes to properly showcase their wares. DiGregorio was once one of the most lethal perimeter snipers in the PBA, but his production and playing time have severely waned. Meanwhile, Murrell, Mendoza, and Demusis have provided occasional flashes of athleticism or hustle, but they haven't delivered the sustained, impactful minutes required to demand a guaranteed roster spot.

Blackwater has already secured their star guard. Retaining Tratter to anchor the paint is the logical next step, and taking a flyer on Cruz-Dumont's youth makes sense. But for the rest of the expiring contracts, it might be time for the Bossing to clear roster spots and find fresh talent to inject into the lineup.
