The TNT Tropang Giga recently made a calculated, yet highly risky, roster maneuver by relegating veteran forward Kevin Ferrer to the Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) list with rights to salary. While TNT management claims there is a "prior agreement" that Ferrer will not sign with other ballclubs while sidelined, the harsh reality of the PBA rulebook dictates otherwise. As an unrestricted free agent, Ferrer is legally free to entertain and sign a guaranteed contract with any rival franchise bold enough to make an offer.
Given his veteran savvy, size, and perimeter touch, Ferrer is a highly valuable commodity sitting in plain sight. If front offices are paying attention, a bidding war could easily materialize. Here are the top three teams that should immediately consider making a contract offer to hijack Ferrer from TNT:
#3. Blackwater Bossing
#2. Meralco Bolts Looking across the league, I feel like Meralco has the clearest and most immediate need for a big forward. The Bolts are constantly tweaking their frontline combinations, and acquiring Ferrer would give them incredible tactical flexibility. He is exactly the type of player that can seamlessly play the small forward spot if Meralco wants to run a supersized, big line-up with their import sliding over to play the power forward (4) position. Ferrer's size and ability to guard the perimeter would allow Meralco to match up physically against the deepest frontcourts in the PBA without sacrificing offensive flow.
#1. Converge FiberXers
For the Converge FiberXers, targeting Ferrer is entirely about addressing their glaring need for spacing. Modern basketball systems live and die by the three-point line, and Converge's driving lanes are often too clogged for their guards to operate effectively. Ferrer is currently shooting an impressive 37% from beyond the arc this season. Adding a legitimate sniper of his caliber, who also possesses the height to shoot over closeouts, would immediately punish opposing defenses that try to pack the paint. He is the exact type of floor-spacing forward that could unlock Converge's offense and take them to the next level.
