NBA Trade Rumors: Sacramento star center could go to?

The Sacramento Kings' offense has long been a beautiful, chaotic symphony with Domantas Sabonis serving as the primary conductor. But as the 2026-27 season gets underway, the music in California's capital has struck a decidedly dissonant chord.

Rumors of a fractured relationship between the three-time All-Star center and the Kings have been simmering since the offseason, but recent reports have turned the heat up to a boil. The core issue centers around Sacramento's shift in offensive philosophy to accommodate their dynamic rookie guard, Darius Acuff Jr. According to Heavy’s Sean Deveney, Sabonis is "not enthused about playing with a ball-dominant guard like Acuff". With Acuff stepping into a massive offensive role early in the season, developing the rookie and maximizing Sabonis's traditional dribble-handoff hub style suddenly look like mutually exclusive goals.

If the Kings are indeed ready to prioritize their backcourt of the future and pivot away from their 30-year-old Lithuanian anchor, the trade market for a walking double-double will be robust. Two Eastern Conference teams have emerged as the most fascinating theoretical destinations.

Toronto Raptors: The Defensive ShieldCBS Sports' Sam Quinn recently highlighted the Raptors as a premier landing spot, noting that Toronto's roster construction perfectly mitigates Sabonis's biggest flaw.

"The Raptors are so loaded defensively that they can cover his vulnerabilities on that end of the floor," Quinn argued, pointing out that matching salary via a combination of Jakob Poeltl or RJ Barrett could make the math work seamlessly.

With Kawhi Leonard's health continually fluctuating and Scottie Barnes needing structural support to keep the offense humming, Sabonis makes schematic sense. Toronto sniffed around Sabonis prior to last year's trade deadline. The franchise has a history of acquiring All-Star big men to push them over the top, and pairing Sabonis's playmaking with Toronto's armada of long, switchable wings could create a fascinating half-court dynamic in the East.

Charlotte Hornets: The Ascending Threat If Toronto offers a defensive cocoon, the Charlotte Hornets offer an offensive playground. Charlotte has been linked to Sabonis for months, though negotiations have historically stalled over Sacramento's massive demands.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Hornets' interest "is still generally there," but noted a significant disconnect between Sacramento's desire for premium draft capital and positive value versus the rest of the league's hesitation to extend Sabonis—who has two years and $94 million remaining on his current deal—into his mid-thirties.

"I don't think Charlotte is motivated to meet the Kings' asking price," Fischer explained, "but if the price comes down, I would think that Charlotte is still a team to monitor in Sabonis' ultimate trade landscape".

Plugging Sabonis into Charlotte's rotation would give Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel an elite screen-setter and secondary playmaker, easing the creation burden on the perimeter. The Hornets are built to shoot at a high volume, and Sabonis's interior gravity and elite rebounding could be the final puzzle piece to vault Charlotte from a fun upstart into a legitimate Eastern Conference playoff menace.

The Kings are currently sitting on a ticking clock. Sabonis remains a foundational talent, but an unhappy star paired with a ball-dominant rookie is a recipe for locker room friction. If Sacramento ultimately decides to lower its asking price, expect the Raptors and Hornets to be the first franchises dialing general manager Monte McNair's number.
