The Yeng Guiao offensive system is legendary in the Philippine Basketball Association for its strict egalitarian approach. Historically, Guiao relies on a deep, unpredictable rotation where everyone gets a touch and no single player dominates the basketball. Even during the peak Rain or Shine years of Paul Lee, "The Lethal Weapon" was never utilized as a sheer, heliocentric focal point. But right now, the Elasto Painters are running a scheme that is mind-boggling by Guiao’s standards: they are funneling almost every possession directly through Adrian Nocum.
The sheer volume of Nocum's current usage was fully exposed during Game 2 of the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals against Converge. Despite the Elasto Painters suffering a loss that allowed Converge to level the series, Nocum’s individual numbers were staggering. He exploded for 22 points and dished out 18 assists, most of which fueled a massive second-half rally at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. To put that playmaking burden into perspective, those 18 assists match the most recorded by any PBA player since Mike Cortez achieved the same feat in the 2012-13 Philippine Cup.
But the biggest risk of Guiao’s mind-boggling usage of Nocum isn't just on the hardwood—it is in the front office. By allowing Nocum to pile up these astronomical, record-chasing numbers, Rain or Shine is actively inflating his market value. Nocum is rapidly establishing himself as a premium, franchise-level point guard. Producing at this historic rate gives him the absolute right to demand a massive salary during his next contract negotiation.
This leads to the ultimate question: Can an independent franchise like Rain or Shine afford to pay him? The PBA landscape is notoriously unforgiving to independent teams when it comes to bidding wars against the league's corporate conglomerates. By running the entire offense through Nocum, Coach Yeng might be inadvertently pricing his own rising star out of Rain or Shine’s budget. The Elasto Painters are developing a superstar, but only time will tell if they are building their own future or simply grooming a high-priced asset for the league's wealthiest teams.
