According to coach Alas, they are allowing their players not to join their practices. He said that they recognized the extent of the danger. So, he said that they will not take it against the players who will not join due to their fear of COVID-19.
Actually, Phoenix went as far as approaching two of their players who are living with individuals who are more susceptible to the virus. The fact is, they are also the team with a player that is currently on a long suspension. I am talking about Calvin Abueva.
The question now is, what is the stand of the PBA?
In the NBA, there are a lot of players who decided not to join the NBA bubble. The bubble is actually a much safer way of executing a sports league during this pandemic than what the PBA is planning.
The biggest NBA star who did not join the NBA in Orlando was Bradley Beal because his team, Washington Wizards, has a minuscule chance of getting into the playoffs. Another one was Avery Bradley of Los Angeles Lakers. He decided to stay home because of his son who has respiratory issues.
So, we should not be surprised if some PBA players will decide to stay home.
The question now is, show they be punished?
Of course not. The league should allow the players to sacrifice a conference of their career in exchange for not getting the risk of acquiring the COVID-19 in the resumption of the league.
Am I confident that the PBA will have the same mindset? Looking at their decisions in the last few years, I have some doubts.
