PBA is dying. That is still true at this very moment. The championship of Meralco will not change that. The farm teams are still there. The duopoly is still there.
So, what is the point of this championship then?
Meralco winning the crown, brings hope to the PBA. That a team with a roster that is not one of the four most powerful rosters in the league, can win the ring.
It means, PBA fans can start to hope again that Rain or Shine, Phoenix, Converge can also win it in the future!
And that belief is needed for fans to show up. That belief that the team that they support can win the crown is the foundation of a person to support a team.
This is the reason why I see this Meralco championship as the most meaningful championship in the last decade, maybe?
And let us be honest, this Meralco playoff conquest is one of the most entertaining ever. That game 6 may have a good argument as the most entertaining game 6 ever!
By the way, San Miguel deserves our respect. They played their hearts out. Junemar Fajardo is old but the guy is still the most valuable player in the league. That magical three point shot will be replayed forever. But that Chris Newsome game-winner is different. It was an explanation point.
PBA can still be saved. One of the parting shots of Mr. Wilfred Uytengsu was, the PBA needs parity to survive.
Meralco gave us a glimpse of that parity. Meralco gave us the hope that the PBA will survive.
