Let us be honest here. None of us expected this to happen. Actually, none of us saw Meralco reaching the finals even when the playoff bracket was finalized. Their line-up compared to San Miguel and Ginebra is not comparable at all.
We can talk about all the core players of Meralco because they are all doing an amazing job. One guy though, that deserves to be the first one in our discussion is Chris Newsome.
Imagine delivering a 40 points performance in a lost and needing to carry that agony into a crucial game 5?
He showed up. He produced 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The one play though that stand out to me was his crunch time block against CJ Perez.
In the last several years, I always see CJ as a better overall player than Chris. The counting numbers are just so much in favor of CJ. I may have underscore the defense of Newsome. He can shutdown CJ. He just did this game 5. Watch him play on defense and you will realize that he is elite on-ball, off-ball and making defensive plays.
Combine his scoring, rebounding, passing, playmaking and is it really wrong to ask if he is the most complete player right now in the league? When I say complete, I am basically saying that he may have the most numbers of above average skills.
Add the fact that he is not injury-prone, he is the obvious leader of Meralco and he can make clutch shots, and all I can say is, he is flawless.
But maybe, he first needs to complete this title conquest before we even begin that discussion.
