In the PBA, the rumor mill never stops spinning, especially when a team is winning. The latest buzz surrounding the TNT Tropang Giga is enough to make any fan do a double-take: speculation that the team is eyeing three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee as a potential replacement for their current phenom, Bol Bol.
But before anyone starts photoshopping McGee into a TNT jersey, team management has a very clear message: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The Rumor: Bringing in the Championship Pedigree
According to reports circulating within the league, there was talk that TNT might be exploring "veteran options" to solidify their frontcourt for the business end of the Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup. The name at the top of that list? JaVale McGee.
At 38 years old, McGee is a household name for basketball fans. With stints at the Warriors, Lakers, and Nuggets, he brings a resume that includes:
Three NBA Championships.
Elite Rim Protection and shot-blocking.
Lob-Threat Energy that has defined his decade-plus career.
On paper, adding a veteran with that much "winning DNA" sounds like a luxury. But in reality, it would mean moving on from a player who is currently rewriting the PBA record books.
The Reality Check: "McGee is Old"
TNT team manager Jojo Lastimosa didn't take long to squash the speculation. Speaking to Fastbreak on Wednesday, Lastimosa was blunt about the prospects of bringing in the veteran center.
“No. McGee is old,” Lastimosa told Fastbreak, effectively ending the conversation before it could gain any more traction.
Beyond the age factor, Lastimosa emphasized that the Tropang Giga are more than satisfied with their current "Unicorn." He noted that there is "no reason why" they would look elsewhere when their current import is performing at an MVP level.
Why Replace a 50-Point Machine?
The most baffling part of the rumor is the timing. Why would a team even consider replacing a player who is quite literally carrying them on his shoulders? Since arriving, Bol Bol has been nothing short of a statistical anomaly in the PBA.
Look at the numbers he is putting up to lead TNT to a 5–2 record:
39.0 Points Per Game
14.7 Rebounds Per Game
1.4 Assists Per Game
Bol Bol isn't just an import; he’s a defensive deterrent and an offensive system all by himself. In their recent win at Ynares Center II, he dropped 50 points, proving that he can take over a game whenever he chooses. Replacing that kind of production with a 38-year-old defensive specialist—no matter how many rings he has—would be a move that defies basketball logic.
JaVale McGee is a legend in his own right, but for the Tropang Giga, the focus is squarely on the present. With Bol Bol healthy and dominant, TNT has the ultimate weapon to defend their Commissioner’s Cup title.
As Jojo Lastimosa made clear via Fastbreak, the "Unicorn" isn't going anywhere. For the rest of the league, that means the nightmare of trying to guard a 7-foot-3 guard with unlimited range continues.
Is there any scenario where a veteran like McGee makes more sense for a playoff run, or is Bol Bol’s 39-PPG production simply too valuable to ever let go?
