The Converge FiberXers are currently riding a four-game winning streak that has generated some of the most absurd offensive box scores in recent PBA history. On paper, they look like an unstoppable juggernaut peaking at the perfect time. However, a deeper dive into the context of this winning streak reveals a much more complicated reality. Before anointing Converge as a legitimate championship contender, we need to separate the genuine progress from the empty calories.
It is incredibly hard to trust the sheer magnitude of this streak simply because of the level of competition. Three of the four victories came against the absolute bottom of the barrel in the PBA.
Against the Macau Giant Pandas, Converge dropped an astronomical 162 points, blowing them out by 54 points while shooting 59.0% from the floor
Blowing out Macau, Titan, and Terrafirma is exactly what a decent PBA team is supposed to do, but it does not serve as a reliable litmus test for playoff readiness. The only truly competitive game in this stretch was a narrow 112-110 victory over the NLEX Road Warriors, a game where Converge was brought back down to earth and held to a much more realistic 44.7% shooting clip
However, even if the competition was incredibly weak, the most undeniable positive takeaway from this stretch is the seamless fit of their import, Cameron Clark.
Regardless of who is defending him, Clark is producing at a hyper-efficient rate that perfectly elevates the FiberXers' offensive system. Against Macau, he was nearly perfect, producing 32 points on an astounding 14-of-15 shooting from the field. He followed that up with another clinical performance against Titan, dropping 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Clark isn't forcing difficult isolation plays or demanding the ball to the detriment of the local rotation; he is picking his spots and finishing everything around the rim.
This high-octane environment has also unlocked Juan Gomez de Liano, who brilliantly orchestrated the offense and delivered two triple-doubles during this stretch. With Clark anchoring the interior efficiency and Gomez de Liano pushing the pace and distributing the basketball, Converge has clearly found a highly functional offensive identity.
Are the FiberXers for real? The offensive chemistry between Clark and Gomez de Liano absolutely is. But until they replicate this level of execution against the defensive schemes of San Miguel, Ginebra, or TNT, this four-game streak is just a highly entertaining warmup.
