In our recent series predicting the next player from each PBA franchise to request a trade, we specifically pinpointed Caelan Tiongson as the most likely candidate for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The logic behind that prediction was deeply rooted in his financial history. Tiongson famously entered the PBA relatively late in his basketball career, a delay largely driven by past rumors that he was actively seeking a high-salary contract to maximize his prime earning years. Given Rain or Shine's status as an independent franchise that has occasionally struggled to retain premium talent—most notably failing to keep Gian Mamuyac—we assumed Tiongson would eventually demand a payday they could not match, leading to an inevitable trade request.
We were wrong, and for Rain or Shine fans, that is incredibly massive, positive news.
Putting all trade speculations to rest, Caelan Tiongson has officially signed a new two-year deal to remain with the Elasto Painters. The official announcement featured a smiling Tiongson putting pen to paper alongside team executives, firmly cementing his future with the franchise.
This extension speaks volumes about the current state of the Rain or Shine organization. Despite his previous desires to secure maximum financial compensation overseas and in other regional leagues, it appears that the environment, culture, and on-court system under head coach Yeng Guiao suited Tiongson exceptionally well. He found a home where his two-way versatility is properly utilized, quickly establishing himself as arguably a top-two player on their roster.
Furthermore, this signing signals a crucial shift for Rain or Shine's front office. To secure a player of Tiongson's caliber, market value, and leverage, it is highly likely that management offered him a maximum contract. By doing so, they proved that they are willing to open the checkbook and invest heavily when the right foundational piece is already in their building. Retaining Tiongson not only solidifies their core for the next two years, but it also sends a strong message to the rest of the league that Rain or Shine can, and will, pay to keep their premier talent.
