In the fast-paced world of PBA basketball, trade rumors are the lifeblood of the daily news cycle. However, fans and analysts alike are learning to take certain reports with a massive grain of salt. Recently, veteran sports columnist Homer Sayson has faced mounting criticism from the basketball community regarding the accuracy and logical soundness of his "insider" scoops.
His latest column, which floats a potential blockbuster trade bringing Mikey Williams back to the TNT Tropang Giga, is a perfect example of why that skepticism is entirely justified.
According to Sayson, a league source indicated that if the Converge FiberXers were to sever ties with Williams, TNT was "open to the idea of re-acquiring Williams in a potential trade for Rey Nambatac, Glenn Khobuntin, and a future draft pick." The column claims that the telecommunications giant was exploring the "Return of the Prodigal Son" storyline before ultimately pivoting to extend Jordan Heading.
Let's start with Mikey Williams. As Sayson himself noted, Williams' tenure with Converge has been incredibly underwhelming. After a nearly three-year hiatus from the league, the rust is glaringly apparent. In the ongoing PBA 50th Season Governors’ Cup, the former two-time Finals MVP is averaging a harmless "triple-single" of just 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. He looks a step slow, his fiery offense is muffled, and it remains entirely uncertain if he will ever regain his peak form at 34 years old.
Now, look at what TNT was allegedly willing to give up: Rey Nambatac, Glenn Khobuntin, and a future draft pick.
Rey Nambatac alone has arguably been more valuable to winning basketball this conference than the current iteration of Mikey Williams. Nambatac has seamlessly integrated into the Tropang Giga's system, providing elite scoring punches and clutch performances—including a massive 30-point, game-winning explosion specifically against Williams' Converge squad just a couple of months ago. Nambatac is in peak form, actively contributing to TNT's success right now. Add in the defensive versatility of Khobuntin and a highly coveted future draft asset, and the proposed package becomes laughably lopsided.
To believe this rumor, you have to believe that the TNT front office—one of the most astute and calculating in the league—looked at a struggling, 34-year-old Williams producing single-digit scoring and concluded: “Yes, let’s trade away our current clutch performer, a solid rotational piece, and a future asset to get him back.”
It simply does not track.
Sayson notes that TNT's interest "faded like the late afternoon sun" after they signed Jordan Heading. In reality, it is highly likely that this specific trade package was never seriously on the table to begin with. While TNT might harbor some nostalgia for the Mikey Williams of old, they are not in the business of mortgaging their current, highly functional rotation—and their future—for a player whose best days appear to be firmly in the rearview mirror.
