PBA Trade Rumors: TNT and Titan stars' contracts are extended and that means they are NOT GETTING TRADED?
In the fast-paced, cutthroat world of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), a multi-year contract extension is often celebrated by fans as a guarantee of stability. Recently, two high-profile players made headlines by putting pen to paper on significant deals: Jordan Heading secured a three-year extension with the TNT Tropang Giga, and Joshua Munzon locked in a new three-year pact with the Titan Ultra Giant Risers.
On the surface, it appears that both the Tropang Giga and the Giant Risers have firmly secured their core pieces until 2029. However, a deeper understanding of PBA front-office maneuvering suggests that the reality might be vastly different. The assumption that Heading and Munzon will absolutely not be traded this year, next year, or for the entire duration of their new three-year contracts is incredibly naive. In fact, the chances that both players are moved before the end of their extensions remain incredibly high.
To understand why, we have to look at the contrasting situations of the two players and the distinct strategies of their respective franchises.
The Jordan Heading Situation: A Logjam in the Backcourt
Jordan Heading is undeniably thrilled with his new deal. After helping TNT secure the 49th Season Commissioner’s Cup title shortly after being acquired from Converge, he is eager to build on that success. "Obviously, the most exciting thing about getting a three-year extension is just being able to compete for championships for at least three more years, and with these guys," Heading stated.
The reality is that TNT possesses a wildly loaded, deeply congested guard rotation. While Heading is an elite offensive talent, the Tropang Giga are constantly managing the minutes and egos of multiple high-level backcourt players. When a franchise has an abundance of riches at one specific position, that surplus inevitably becomes their primary trade bait to upgrade other areas of the roster (like their frontcourt depth, especially given the recent health concerns surrounding big man JP Erram).
Signing Heading to a three-year deal wasn't just about retaining his services on the floor; it was about asset management. A player on an expiring contract has limited trade value because opposing teams can simply wait to sign him in free agency. By securing him for three years, TNT has maximized Heading’s trade value. He is now a highly attractive, controllable asset that the MVP Group can dangle in blockbuster trade negotiations whenever they feel the need to retool their roster for another championship push.
The Joshua Munzon Situation: The Franchise Cornerstone
Joshua Munzon’s situation with Titan Ultra is completely different, but it still doesn't guarantee he is untouchable.
Late in his previous contract, Munzon was heavily shopped on the trading block, with a move to TNT nearly materializing. Instead, he signed the extension, stating, “I’ll be here for the next couple of years for sure... I’m happy we work it out and get on the same page. I’m ready to give my best effort moving forward”.
If Titan Ultra is operating under the guidance of a new financial backer—as the massive mid-season reorganization of their coaching staff and roster suggests—Munzon is perfectly positioned to be their absolute main guy. He is the face of the franchise, and it will be incredibly hard for the new management to justify letting him go.
However, independent or newly backed franchises in the PBA often face immense pressure from the established conglomerates. While Munzon is the cornerstone right now, if Titan Ultra fails to surround him with the necessary pieces to compete over the next two years, the narrative will shift. A three-year contract means Munzon is a highly valuable commodity. If the Giant Risers eventually decide they need to completely rebuild, trading a superstar with multiple years left on his deal guarantees them a massive haul of future first-round picks and young talent.
The Bottom Line
A three-year extension in the PBA is rarely a blood oath; it is a strategic business move. It protects the franchise from losing a star for nothing and gives the player financial security. While Jordan Heading and Joshua Munzon are locked in for now, do not be surprised if either—or both—find themselves wearing different jerseys long before 2029 rolls around.
